Monday letters: Glenwood trash, Silt Heyday success, support Brava, The Marble Hub hours

Opinion Opinion | Aug 27, 2023

America was built on free enterprise. Freedom to choose is a unique American condition, regardless of what you are choosing. When products compete, they get better and cheaper.

The Glenwood Springs CCP has tossed aside these American mainstays and decided they will control trash disposal in Glenwood.

Simple geometry debunks their claim of reducing the number of garbage trucks. If they are so concerned with South Canyon filling up, why are they building at an unprecedented rate to bring in thousands of new garbage creators.

I recycled long before their mandates. Now the CCP will now want to be an overseer to my daily life. The CCP will fine me if I do not follow their rules or create what they have arbitrarily determined to be an acceptable amount of trash.

We will now be subsidizing this government overreach, including new positions which heretofore were unnecessary, through higher trash rates and nondescript “service charges.”

The Glenwood Springs Community Broadband Network (GSCBN) did it right. They created a professionally run department and came up with a superior product. They took that product to the marketplace and are successfully competing with a billion dollar corporation. The City did not throw all the competition out and tell residents they WILL use the GSCBN.

I will not participate in the garbage grab. I will continue to recycle as I have and make an occasional trip to South Canyon.

See you on election day. Me and all my friends.

Andy Anderson, Glenwood Springs

The Silt Heyday Committee would like to thank all the contributors that helped to make the 53rd Silt Heyday a success. This includes ALL those who donated financial support, door prizes and services. Because of you, we were able to provide our HomeTown Celebration at Veterans Park in Silt and provide a venue for fundraising for our own Silt Historical Society and Silt Historical Park.

We want to give special thanks to our Gold Sponsors, The Town of Silt and Police Department, Down Valley Septic, High Frequency Living, Mountain Waste and Recycling, Valley View Hospital-Silt Family Practice, Waste Management, Mountain Waste and Recycling, The Whimsical Wagon; our Platinum Sponsors Alpine Bank, Briscoe and Howe Accounting Services, Defiance Rafting and Rislende Events, Elmer Glass, Native American Crane Service, Timberline Pool and Spa.

The other sponsors are too numerous to mention, but we appreciate all that they did this year to make Heyday successful, whether they provided financial support or in-kind donations

We wish to thank all the people that donated their time for Silt Heyday, including our parade entrants, our parade judges; our grand marshals — the Silt Police Department who raised our Park flag; Gage Donelson who sang our National Anthem, our booth providers; local support including the Silt Police Department and the security volunteers, Silt Historical Society friends in the kitchen and in the beer booth, the Town of Silt employees, and all of the others that helped as we celebrated “Cheers to 40 Years” with the Silt Historical Society.

Thanks to our sound providers Precise Decibels and our bands, the Colorado Currys, Feeding Giants and Louie and the Lizards.

If we forgot anyone it is not intentional, and we thank you too, it was difficult to keep track of all the work going on.

Without all of this support, we could not have done it.

Like Donald Jones, we also go to Brava several times a month. When we want good food, good service and a place that makes us feel special, we head to Brava. The owner must have had a VERY good reason to ask the angered ladies to leave. We will certainly continue to patronize our favorite restaurant.

I write in support of Vincente (Vinnie) and his restaurant, Brava, in Glenwood Springs. The letter writer, who claims to have lived in Glenwood for 47 years, yet has an address of Scottsdale, Arizona, goes to the police department to complain of being asked and then told to leave private property. I served 30+ years in the restaurant business and it is rare that an owner or manager needs to raise their voice to a customer, but if it is necessary it is usually because the customer has told the owner/manager that they can’t tell the customer how to behave. I suspect that there is more to the story than we have heard. Full disclosure: I hired Vinnie as a busboy earlier this century when I was the manager of the Red Onion in Aspen. My wife and I frequent Brava when we can. most often with the former owners of the Red Onion, Wabs and Iggy.

Just like employees, it’s hard to find good customers these days. We do our best.
